Amber valley stroke group was originally called Ripley Stroke Club and was formed in 1982. In 2002 it was renamed and became a registered charity. Its main purpose back then was to provide a social place for stroke survivors their familes & carers to meet with others dealing with stroke. The meetings were held every other Friday 2pm- 4pm, and centred around entertainment with tea & biscuits, raffle etc.
Trips out were arranged two or three times a year. It has stayed that way up till recent times when I joined 6 years ago. We realise now, that stroke does not discriminate with age and increasingly more working age people are being affected. So, with that in mind and after attending the annual (Stroke Associations Clubs Conference) in Nottingham recently we decided to introduce more activity-based meetings, as well as entertainers & speakers to complement the program of things on offer.
These will involve such things as indoor curling, Boccia and other games that help promote balance and co-ordination, which are important for stroke survivors with mobility issues. There will be trivia style activities, crafting and other group activity-based tasks. We are currently a small group of happy stroke survivors their families & carer's; we meet every two weeks on Friday afternoons at St Joseph's Church Hall 94 Butterly Hill Ripley DE5 3LW.
We hope this innovative approach to meetings, will give us a fresh image fit for the 21st century and encourage more working age stroke survivors to come join our happy family, where we can have fun make new friends and learn to live
our new lives with stroke to the full & realise that:
"There can be life after stroke!"
